It’s fair to say that air travel has become a bit of a nightmare over the past few years. Budget airlines are great, but I long for the days when you got treated like a human being rather than a side of cattle.
In the old days, you’d expect free check-in bags, a free meal, a nice little bottle of wine, and a seat that was actually big enough to fit your butt! (Of course, you’d probably also be allowed to smoke – not all change is a bad thing!)
These days, however, you get charged extra to check in your bag, extra to get on the plane early, extra to have something to eat or drink. And the result is that travel has never been more stressful.
The charge to join the boarding line at the gate is ridiculous. And if you’re not one of the first people to get on the plane, good luck finding space for your bag in the overhead locker. And that’s where the Tom Bihn Aeronaut comes in. I’ve actually borrowed one of these off a girlfriend, and it’s definitely on my must-have list for the future.
The bag doesn’t look big, but it punches above its weight. It fits underneath a standard airline seat, but has enough room for clothes for a week. Trust me – I know! (And I don’t like to pack too light!). My favorite feature is the fold-away backpack straps. These allow you to carry the bag very comfortably on your back, but tuck away if you want to get rid of them. This is perfect if you want to check the bag in as the regular check-in desks will handle it and you won’t have to go to Outsized Baggage.
Here’s a really nice review with a few pictures of the bag in action. I much prefer the Burnt Orange color, though. That’s the one I’ll be getting!
